Sorry for the multiple postings. Anyway, I was wondering:
- do you guys know of any good character-building resources (for original characters not related to RP) on the Internet? All I've come up with so far is character interviews, which... don't have tons of great questions. At least not the ones I've found. |

My grandma died on Wednesday at 9:12 pm. I was lucky enough to be with her at the time and I have to say, it really helped me find closure. I'm glad I could be there for her and my parents and I am super glad Baco was there. She was so supportive and made, like, half of Thanksgiving dinner. I'm glad - thankful, I guess, if we want to go with the Thanksgiving theme - that she didn't have to wait too long. I'm thankful it was peaceful passing and that she didn't die alone.
I'm really grateful for all the support you guys gave me! You guys are the best. <3 |

| Birthday-ness! |
[Nov. 27th, 2009|07:16 pm] |
I step away from my computer for a few days and end up missing out on someone's birthday. soranokumo, I hope you had an awesome birthday! You deserve the best of the best, plus some mochi (which I recently tried and realized was delicious, by the way). You are so considerate and compassionate and talented and nice and amazing. <3 < 3 <3 |

Today I took the awesome-est survey ever, based entirely on their last few demographic questions. When asking about race, they told you to click as many of the boxes as applied to you (white, Latino, native Alaskan, etc.), which was super exciting on its own, but it ALSO had the following for sex:
- Male - Female - Transgender - Other
HELL YEAH |

So today I thought, "Hey, let's go somewhere nice to eat out now that I can actually make it out the door and infect everyone I see!" To accomplish this goal, I forced Baco to eat at Olive Garden with me.
Okay. So. Olive Garden. I used to like it. I'm pretty sure I used to like it. Now? I have a recommendation for everyone:
DO NOT GO THERE
It's - it's - I swear all the food is frozen*, the complimentary breadsticks come from Fazoli's, and they try to get you to order marinara sauce with your breadsticks. DO NOT DO IT. IT WILL COST YOU $3.25. I KNOW THIS FROM EXPERIENCE. And you think, oh, this had better be damn good marinara. And they bring it out and you think, oh, well, hey, at least there's a lot of it. BUT THEN IT TURNS OUT THE BOAT IT COMES IN IS REALLY SHALLOW AND THERE'S BARELY ENOUGH THERE FOR THREE STICKS.
And also your waiter will be creepy and kept smirking and playing with his tie and trying to get you to order dessert before you've even finished with the salad.
* In fact, our waiter told us that he waited to tell the cook to make it because it "only takes two minutes to make." Uhhhhh. I guess maybe they just have a vat of noodles? And the noodles are weirdly smooth and the pasta was not fancy, for all they tried to make it sound fancy. It tasted like something that would have come from The Spaghetti House.
OH OH OH ALSO I BOUGHT HOUSE OF LEAVES and I don't have to write it in blue yet because I have not been brainwashed. Yet. |

Guys I am sick. It is not a good feeling.
On the plus side, I found the unofficial Buffy soundtrack, which includes all the songs in all the episodes. WIN
AND! I have more time to watch ReBoot now. |

So, today I learned that there are quite a few "moderate" conservative leaders who are calling for states to secede from the Union. Um, WHAT? Really? Over health care reform?
I am also reading a book called He's a Stud, She's a Slut: And 49 Other Double Standards Every Woman Should Know by Jessica Valenti. I don't think it should just be for women though; I think she points out double standards that everyone should know. I want to hand this book to some of my friends - guys and girls, but mostly guys - and have them read it with an open mind. She talks about how women aren't allowed to be angry (just on the rag!), how women can never be a perfect enough mom but men who are the tiniest bit engaged with their children are amazing fathers, how toys are gendered, etc. etc. It's well-written (although she uses a lot of parentheses), it contains seriousness AND humor, and just... I don't know, it really brings home the fact that there is definitely a lot left to do.
Tonight Baco and I watched Cabaret. I was highly skeptical going into it after having watched the episode of The Muppet Show featuring Joel Grey, but I really liked the movie. Joel Grey was CREEPY and, uh, looked way better in make up I have to say. ( Spoiler cut, if anyone cares. )
More things: this weekend I went to southern Illinois to collect insects! It was awesome and also there is some really beautiful forested areas down there. Forested areas with LAKES and WATER HOLES for the swimming! And awesome rock structures! And hiking on non-paved paths! So I really want to go back sometime with Baco and spend more than just three hours poking around (possibly also with draegonhawke and _coherent, assuming there will ever be a time when we all have time and money). |

| Labor Day Weekend |
[Sep. 8th, 2009|09:44 pm] |
Back! I had an awesome weekend visiting transnomad and draegonhawke and _coherent. It makes me sad that everyone lives so far away. I miss you guys! And being able to hang out with people who like the same things I like (e.g., video games and not Project Runway).
Baco and I went to the Old Thresher's Reunion with Nomad, which was awesome. I think we were stuck in some kind of time loop, because I swear we were there longer than 3 hours. Still! Extra time meant we could watch some Star Trek and digest all of the festival food we'd eaten. Mmm, roasted nuts, I love you so much. OH OH AND WE GOT TO RIDE A STEAM ENGINE TRAIN
IT SPAT STEAM ONTO THE GROUND
AND YOU COULD FEEL THE GROUND RUMBLING
Seriously, if I had been there on my own, I think I would've just stayed by the tracks for about an hour. And you guys thought I was bad!
Weirdly, riding the train wasn't as exciting as seeing it go by. I blame this on the fact that there wasn't really enough room to build up any speed.
Also cool: watching the old school printing press in action. AWESOME. (The threshers were cool too.)
And then Baco and I went over to hang out with An and L and we had delicious pizza and watched Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow which... I didn't enjoy as much as I had the first time I'd seen it, but I still have an odd liking for it, embarrassing as that might be. I don't know! The muted, stylized photo effects might have something to do with it. Or maybe Frankie? Something like that. And we talked a bit about ghost-like things, which made me happy. Every time we hang out with An and L I want to hear all of the ghostly happenings again. (Also play Velociraptor DDR. Curse being tired!)
AND THEN WE HAD AMAZING SUSHI. Oddly, none of it was actually raw fish, but oh man, so good. Om nom. And enjoyed nature!
TODAY I WOKE UP EARLY AND WAS TIRED. THE END. |

Going to see transnomad, draegonhawke, and _coherent this weekend! (Assuming they do not suddenly have other plans, since I confirmed everything about as last minute as you can get. D'oh.) Man, I am so excited to see everyone!
This means that I probably will not be on the Internet this weekend.
BEFORE I LEAVE, I, uh, wanted to rant quickly about crazy conservatives? I'm assuming most of the people on my list are not crazy conservatives. I am distinguishing "crazy conservatives" from just plain "conservatives" because I am assuming most of the Republicans (and other people who identify politically as conservative) in the United States do not actually believe Obama is like Hitler or that he's trying to get all of the children in the country to worship him dictator-like.
BECAUSE NO SANE PERSON BELIEVES THOSE THINGS.
Except... except I worry that a lot of sane people do believe those things because the media keeps talking about it and they don't a) have the chance to hear what reality is and b) don't actively seek out the truth for themselves. For some of them, it might actually be extremely hard to find out what really is going on if they don't have Internet at home.
I am so, so angry and disappointed with the tactics Republicans are using. The crazy ones are being completely ridiculous and completely making shit up and the sane ones, the moderate ones are not doing anything about it. GUYS. Guys. Is staying true to party lines really so important that you are willing to let your fellow Republicans totally screw our system over? Is it worth promoting the use of lies to an extent that I have never seen before? (Granted I haven't been around for that long and don't have the best of memories, but... it just seems to be going to new lows of dishonesty and scare tactics.)
Argh. |

| Notes to people! |
[Sep. 3rd, 2009|10:32 pm] |
Twig and Thorne: I am not able to read Pale Sky tonight because a) I just got home after an entire day of being away from the house (9AM-10:30PM, wooo) and am really tired. Too tired to give Pale Sky a proper reading. D: D: D:
People who have commented on my posts: I am not able to reply to you tonight because see previous note. D: D: D: (I love the idea of a support group for doing creative things, though. And *HUUUGS* to Catt!)
Rinoa: Yaaaay FF8 talkings! It makes me really happy to see everything you are saying, and I would reply to your poll but then I would have to explain myself and see previous notes. (Seriously! FF8, oh man. I think it was my first true fandom love. <3)
Me: Why are you not in bed yet? GO SLEEP |

I've been staying away from the whole health reform thing because, honestly, I don't know what I'm talking about. But I was reading Dylan Meconis' blog* and she had this wonderful paragraph that pretty sums up my thoughts.
Which plan you sign up for should be a matter of choice. If you think government care is a rotten idea, you shouldn’t have to use it. You can go to a private school, too. But what all those reform opponents who rail about not wanting their choices to be taken away seems to fundamentally fail to understand is that, by defending the current state of affairs, they are denying choice to those who cannot afford healthcare or who are being abused by what coverage they have.
Unfortunately, she disabled her Comments section, so I can't ask her if I can quote this. But I thought it was well worth taking the chance.
* She writes and draws Family Man which is one of my very favorite webcomics. The art is amazing and the story is equally good. |

I miss being creative. I miss creating. I want to take words and put them together in new ways or maybe rediscover some old ways. I want to buy markers and crayons and paint and splash colors in abstract patterns or maybe an animal I just made up.
I want to want to do these things badly enough I actually do them.
I worry I'm growing too old, or that science is stifling activities that require thought and creativity outside of work. |

So much work for just preparing a lab! A lab where everything is already set up and all I'm doing is guiding students through it! MAN OH MAN
I just hope the sparkly unicorn pays off.
I recently checked out Tori Amos' American Doll Posse CD from the library and I really like it. Haven't paid too much attention to the lyrics yet, but... yes. The songs are very pretty and slightly more rocking than I expected, but it really fits. And really fits the mood I'm in right now.
Today I went to a brunch and successfully socialized. At least, in the latter half I did. I'm learning how to talk to complete strangers! YEAH |

Signs I need more sleep:
a) My body seems to be lacking on the thermoregulation department. b) Lots of typos! c) Almost getting into two car crashes in as many nights! d) ...Possibly not related, but the corner of my right eye hurts and randomly leaks fluid. I think possibly I have a clogged tear duct or an ingrown eyelash or something? e) ...I am making a post about how I need more sleep. f) Oh! And. Today I walked into a dark room and felt a huge wave of sleepiness roll over me.

| In search of covers |
[Aug. 24th, 2009|09:53 pm] |
Why can I not find any covers of "I Kissed A Girl" sung by a girl? WHERE IS MY LESBIAN COVER (3:12) Does anyone have better finding-covers-skills than I do? Or, uh, any covers that turn out gayer than they started? (Note: cover does not need to include alternative lyrics.)
Other than that, today has been a pretty good day. I am happy and singing.
ETA: DEAR SIR OR MADAM THAT KEEPS SMOKING THOSE AWFUL, AWFUL CIGARS: some of the tenants in this building like to have their windows open at night to let in the nice night air. Your cigars smell like a skunk was roasted alive. And also a bit like unwashed -- unwashed something. Rolls of fat? Rotting leaves? Urine? Feces? I can't quite tell, but whatever it is, it is foul. |
